Here follows a gallery of almost every oil painting I’ve done.
I do my paintings digitally in paint emulator software such as Artrage 6 or the free and open source Krita, both of which I find to be better than even the most expensive tools on the market.
I start by taking a RAW photo of whatever I’m going to paint—usually a landscape—and then I develop the photo in the ridiculously powerful raw developer darktable so the colours look exactly as they did to me when I laid eyes on the subject.
After I’ve gotten the photo to look the way I want it, I open up Artrage 6 or Krita and use the photo as a colour reference. I paint each individual brush-stroke by hand using a drawing tablet, as I absolutely do not condone so-called “auto-painting” filters.
For prints of my paintings, check out my shop (coming soon). There you’ll be able to order many different prints of my work, as well as other products related to my paintings such as coffee mugs, blankets, and phone cases!

Impressionist Digital Oil Paintings by H. M. Turnbull
I was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and when I was young I did a fair amount of painting with watercolours. Tragically my paternal grandmother’s health began to wane, and my family moved to an Alberta oil town to be closer to her. My parents had planned only to remain there for five years, but it soon turned into fifteen. As one might imagine of a prairie oil town, there wasn’t much to paint and I stopped. When I finally moved back to my birthplace on Vancouver Island, the beauty of the place was such that I found myself moved to begin painting again, this time with oils.
