Fantasy writers should learn the International Phonetic Alphabet.

My latest article will teach you the basics of how to use the International Phonetic Alphabet.  Geared towards fantasy writers who want to craft better names for their characters, this article covers the basic types of consonants and vowels, including places and manners of articulation for consonants and some of the more common vowel qualities.

After you learn the basics, I’ll go on to talk about some facts about language that might help you design your own phonology.  I conclude with some tips on how you can use this knowledge to shift the sounds of any word till you have the character name you need.
