Happy New Year!

This post was migrated from my earlier blog:
Painting The Lord of the Rings Miniatures.

Firstly, I celebrated the new year on Durin’s Day. Second, I would like to say that I am amazed at how many people are reading my blog and it brings me great joy to see all your comments.

The Eye of Sauron

A Citadel miniature base painted with the Eye of Sauron.I’m sorry for the lack of content over the last few months. Rest assured that I’m not dead, and that I’m hard at work creating some exciting new content for and relating to the blog. I’ll reveal what exactly it is in due course…

In the meantime, I’ll reveal something I painted quite a while ago: The Eye of Sauron!

No, it’s not the fancy finecast one that Games Workshop sells. It’s the great eye, lidless, wreathed in flame. His gaze pierces earth, cloud, and flesh.

How I Painted the Base

To make the eye, I glued sand to a 60mm round base, just as I would were I basing a miniature. I painted it using the same technique as I did when painting Mordor terrain (explained here), before beginning to paint the eye itself. I didn’t do the final highlight of Administratum Grey until the eye was done, which I think blended it nicely.

In designing the look of the eye, I drew inspiration from both the movie and the book. It took me a while but I finally got a look with which I was happy. I began by painting an outline on the base, for which I used Rhinox Hide. After that, I heavily drybrushed the area within the outline using Evil Sunz Scarlet, then Troll Slayer Orange. I then used Yriel Yellow where I could still see the brown outline.

Because the pupil didn’t look dark enough, I drybrushed it with a small amount of Abaddon Black. On the base, there can be seen three red lines that run along the inside of the eye. For these I used a 50/50 mix of Wazdakka Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet. Afterwards, to bring all the parts of the eye together, I drybrushed the whole of the eye with Troll slayer orange.

Finally, to bring together the whole base, I drybrushed it all with Administratum Grey.
